This article is about the physical and spiritual aspects of memory; how spirits remember things, how past life memories exist, and how guardians share memory with the carrier. No Image Available
In regular people memory is stored and retrieved chemically within the brain. Some memories are short term and can disappear in a few minutes, or if it's a catchy tune it may disappear within a few hours to a few days, but it will eventually go away and you will have a hard time trying to recall it. Long term memories are usually ones that give a strong impression upon the individual, mainly subconsciously as one may recall trivial things long into the future but not important dates, which only have importance to the conscious mind.
At current the borders between the mind, the spirit, and the soul aren't defined on this site, but this will be a brief summary. The mind is the personality part of a person, the spirit is their presence in the world (excluding the physical body), while the soul is their actual consciousness/sentience. The mind is what thinks about things and tries to access memories from the brain. Memories may be stored in the spirit, or chi, part of a person, or even a piece of chi that's not part of a person can be given limited memories to be accessed by anyone capable. Current research hasn't too deeply investigated the memories the soul can keep but it is believed that it stores them outside of itself, in the actual universe itself by its existence, allowing for in-depth and clear memories, but the problem is that of accessing these memories, and generally folks do not have such extraordinary control of their soul, the author included.
The barrier between physical living things and spiritual living things is that physical living things have a brain, and thus use that brain extensively (it serves as a great tool), but this leads to dependence and not knowing how to use other present capabilities. An entity may attempt to communicate spiritually but unless the receiver knows how to interact spiritually they might try and focus with their brain but achieve nothing. This may be a reason that science cannot detect anything special occurring in the brain, except for a different sort of focus, when people meditate or pray. This lack of a physical brain also reduces the sort of memories that an entity may recall. Typically it may be more emotionally intense memories that are stored, if they have lived in a physical body before. If not then their mind will be drastically different from that of a person and it would be up to the receiver to adapt for proper communication and understanding. The emotionally intense requirement may also be an explanation for various 'ghosts' and 'hauntings', where a living creature experienced or felt something significant and the mental makeup was such that the resulting spirit was twisted for a singular task, that is haunting. Though this article does not claim knowledge into those subject areas.
Entities that share a body with a living creature/person on a long-term basis may have a portion of available physical memory available to them if there are periods when this entity is in control of the body. The resulting memories, when viewed from the perspective of the body's owner, seem out of place and don't have the memories of creating those memories, so the feeling of the self is not there, which may be confusing for the individual. If shifting control does not take place the entity relies on storing any major or emotional memories in its spirit. Things like preferences, mood, and behavior path are stored in the spirit. Things like whether the entity loves someone is believed to be part of the soul and appears to be "read-only" when it comes to the conscious level. Also, the entity strongly relies on the ability to access the memories and feelings of the person they are with for the best understanding and most adaptive communication. The person's own memories of past interactions with the entity and their reactions to those interactions play a major role as well in how the entity goes about a conversation, should it have those resources available to it. If that is not the case it will rely upon what memories it has stored in its spirit.
Past life memories are an occurrence for some people who have lived a previous life. These memories come to their conscious awareness gradually, or at times suddenly. The method by which they come may be random or could be initiated by some sort of stimuli. It is understood that past life memories are a combination or memories that the spirit possesses, and memories that the soul possesses. The spirit's memories are simple ones that recall events from the past that may have been important at the time they happened, but from the new perspective they seem trivial. Despite this, such memories may be of great important to the owner as they provide better insight than absolutely nothing (which typically isn't the case, but for argument's sake). Memories of the soul are an opposite to the former; during the time of the experience the individual may not view the particular experience as anything special. In their current life, when the soul decides to bring that memory forth it may have a great impact on their life and/or view of themselves. These sorts of memories cannot be forgotten due to the nature of the storage but an interesting discovery from limited observations is that they only come when the individual is ready to properly handle their meaning.
It is theorized that traumatizing memories that cause mental distress are typically stored in the spirit, and that it is the opening up emotionally that is therapeutic and beneficial. That the memories in the brain are simply images and sounds, along with whatever other perceptions people had or invented for the memory. Though this theory is untested and is simply for the reader to think over and compare to what they know.
