The 'darkness' is a part of the human heart. It cannot be removed or completely blocked, and itself the darkness does not actually matter. What matters is how the human being reacts to the darkness when it is most active. The darkness desires to grow and consume the human in their desirable traits, ie free will, courage, imagination, love. If successful the result is a controlling fear and wretchedness that the person is chained to on the mental level.
In opposition to the darkness is the "light" (as it's best known), this is the part of the heart that is directly controlled by god, and because of this, when active, it is an extremely powerful force within the person. This is also the part of the heart that brings inner strength to the already unique traits the human being has.
Among this there are ~creatures~ who themselves are NOT the darkness, but feed off of the results of the darkness in a person. As the darkness consumes it deteriorates a person to a baser version of
themselves and the outcome of this is happily devoured by these creatures. This happens because they are not prevented from coming near the human being, as opposed to the natural protection mental and spiritual well-being provides.
Their direct opposites are angels; who are instructed to protect humanity and individual people by their creator. They are instructed to help maintain balance without giving any one individual or group an advantage, but there are and have been exceptions. This forces people to look to their inner strength and abilities to accomplish tasks and solve their problems.
